A complimentary youth education and stewardship program brought to you by CA State Parks and Surfing Madonna Oceans Project! With fun, high quality recreation, coastal inspiration and ocean education, we can all help protect our most valued natural resources and “Save the Ocean”!
The Seaside Stewards Program is held at Seaside State Beach in Solana Beach each year. Each session will include scavenger hunts, games, demonstrations, exploring, and learning from California State Parks coastal experts! High School volunteers (peer buddies) will be helping all the experts give your child the very best experience possible!

Theme #1: SHARKS
Sharks are often misunderstood and feared by beach goers, so let’s squash those fears! Learn all about shark size, shape and what those big teeth are best for. The local stingrays glide along the water’s edge and we will learn about their super powers, but also how to avoid encountering them in the water this summer!
Theme #2: SHORE BIRDS
The Pelican Patrol flies overhead guarding our beaches. They dive into the waves looking for a delicious meal. Small Sanderlings chance the waves looking for a little bite of something the ocean reveals. Shorebirds live and breathe, eat and sleep, at the beach! Together we will find out how and why!
Theme #3: KELP – AN UNDERWATER FOREST
The kelp forests provide a safe and robust habitat for an amazing number of species. Kelp even helps us in our daily lives!! Learn about this dark and mysterious yet thriving underwater forest and all of the animals, big and small, that call it home.
Theme #4: WHALES
Baleen whales and dolphins are often seen from the sandy beach and high top bluffs of Southern California. We will first get to know the size, habitat, diet and special concerns of local whale populations. Then, we will dive into these large marine mammals and learn how scientists and researchers tell them apart.
